The design of Blast Central is that all its the modules operate around a single core, and that although they access the same information they are separate programs. The advantage of this approach is that new modules can be created for new analyses, better costing, new design tools and so on, without disturbing existing and working programs.
The system centralizes the information storage using a database. The supported database formats include: MS/Access 97, MS/Access 2000, MS/Access XP, MS/Access 2002-2003, and MS/SQL Server 2000. From a users perspective the advantage of this approach is that it is possible to provide simultaneous access to the blast design information by multiple independent modules. Depending on your network Information may even be accessible and updatable from remote locations.
For maintenance, customization and even the ongoing evolution of Blast Central using databases has allowed additional modules to be created using traditional programming techniques, but also allows the data to be "connected" to company web sites and even accessed using using familiar office tools such as Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word. It is possible for anyone to augment and customize the primary capability of Blast Central without incurring high customization or maintenance costs.
The blast design system can be described in four phases.
| Phase 1: | Base System | |
| Phase 2: | Blast Analysis Tools | |
| Phase 3: | Internet Controls | |
| Phase 4: | Blast Prediction Tools and Models |
